Residents of Coomacka are fed up with the flooding, and promises of relief measures that remain just that— promises that are never fulfilled. At present, sections of this small community located about seven miles from Mackenzie (Linden) is inundated with waters from the nearby Demerara River, and they people are at their wits’ end.According to the residents, it is about a week now since the river has risen, and continues to rise.Pig pens, fowl pens and pit latrines are under water. Persons are forced to wade in that water to execute their daily chores. But compounding the problem is the fact that Coomacka has no potable water, so residents are forced to use the present foul river water for domestic purposes.Waste from the pit latrines is often visible in the water, according to the residents, and when there is no rain , they are forced to use the very water for bathing and washing dishes.“Is rain water we depending on right now, and when the rain ain’t fall we got to conserve whatever little water we have for cooking and drinking. This thing really hard on us, especially for people with a couple children, because they need more water,” one resident related.Another resident, Lincoln Ward, said that he lost two cows over the past few years due to flooding, as whenever the water rises, he has no alternative but to loose the cows, which subsequently roam ‘all over the place’. : “eople steal them.”Ward said that since the 2006 high tides when much of the community was under water, there were promises that machinery would have been dispatched to the area to dredge the river. However to date this has not been done, even though there were several subsequent promises.Wayne Naar is another Coomacka resident who has been severely affected by the floods.A Pit latrine and animal pens under waterAccording to Naar,Cheap Nike NFL Jerseys, a farmer and fisherman, who supplies the community with fresh fish, the current flood has destroyed his ground provisions and other crops, including black eye and red peas.Naar said that these commodities are his main sources of income, and now the high waters have rendered him without any immediate source of income. It is the general consensus that unless the river is dredged, flooding will continue to be a huge problem in this community. The Coomacka beach is fast approaching the opposite side of the river, and residents walk as far out as the middle of the river it was claimed. The beach was formed over the years from sand that washes down from the East Montgomery mines.According to residents, during mining, water which accumulates in the excavated pits has to be pumped out to facilitate works. The water is pumped into the river carrying residual gravel and sand, which builds up overtime. It is this residue that has resulted in the ever-growing beach that is silting up the river and displacing the water resulting in flooding.Coomacka residents are appealing to those in authority to address this situation with the urgency it deserves. They are also appealing to GWI to establish a well or other water facility in the area.Coomacka is one of the communities in Linden which was recently earmarked for dredging under the NDIA programme to alleviate flooding in Region Ten. Residents contend that such a programme should have been operational long ago.
