LOS ANGELES - Writer-director Spike Lee and stars Debbie Reynolds and Gena Rowlands will be presented with Honorary Oscars with the Academy of FILM Arts & Sciences.
Recipients of the annual Governors Honours and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award were announced Thursday night.
The Governors Award is provided "to honor outstanding distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the condition of film arts and sciences, or for exceptional service towards the Academy."
All three have been nominated for Academy Honours before but have never won.
"The Plank is proud to recognize our honorees' exceptional contributions at this year's Governors Honours," stated Academy Chief executive Cheryl Boone Isaacs, adding which the artists were becoming celebrated because of their "passion, dedication and a desire to make a positive difference."
Lee, a graduate of New York University's film school (where he shot the hour-long "Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads"), made a remarkable feature film debut with the 1986 comedy-drama of a woman's intimate liberation, "She's Gotta OWN IT." It won Best First Feature on the Self-employed Spirit Honours.
He gained an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for his 1989 drama, "Perform the proper Thing,Ray Ban UK," about the broiling racial tensions within a Brooklyn community. In 1998 Lee also distributed an Oscar nomination for Greatest Documentary Feature for his film, "4 Little Girls," about the 1963 bombing of the chapel in Birmingham,Air Max Baratas, Ala.
